LAKE KANASATKA WATERSHED ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING
July 11, 2009
Moultonborough Public Library Community Room
The annual meeting of the Lake Kanasatka Watershed Association (LKWA) was held on July 11, 2009, at 9am at the Moultonborough Public Library. After a brief social hour, the business meeting was called to order by President Antonia von Gottberg.
Ms. von Gottberg, President, introduced the current officers and committee members.

Reports: Jane Fairchild, Secretary, read the minutes of the August, 2008, meeting, which were approved unanimously as read.

Doug Whitley, Treasurer, read the Treasurers’ Cash Flow Report. (See attached). In response to a question, Doug stated there were 55 dues paying members in 2007, and 81 dues paying members in 2008. He does not know how many eligible homes are on the lake and could join if they wished, but our mailing list is a little over 300 homes. A question was raised regarding seeking sponsorship from local businesses for donations to LKWA. After discussion, it was decided that unless we have a specific fund-raising need, we would not burden local businesses with further charitable requests.

Jane Fairchild, Boat Parade Coordinator, reported on the 2009 July 4th Boat Parade. She thanked Lynn and Jim Youtz as the Chairs of this year’s event, assisted by Paul and Cindy Smith. The parade was well attended despite heavy downpours and wind. After a brief discussion, the time of the parade for 2010 will be changed from 2pm to 4pm on July 4th.

John Scudder, Webmaster, requested that people send him additional ideas and news for the website.

Jane Fairchild, Lay Monitor, gave the water quality report from the UNH Water Quality Monitoring Program. The latest report from the 2007 monitoring indicates that lake nutrients have steadily increased over the years. Lake Kanasatka remains an unproductive, pristine lake that borders on conditions seen in more nutrient-rich lakes (greener, less clear water). She reviewed steps recommended by UHN including septic system maintenance, reduced use of fertilizers and avoidance of run-off and sediment washout. Jane also stated that long-time volunteer monitors Flo and Rudy Laporte feel they can no longer continue. The group thanked the Laportes for their service. Rich Goulet and Enid Burrows volunteered to serve as new monitors for the water quality program.

Mark Whary, Loon Coordinator, presented the loon report. The raft was placed in the Kilnwood Cove in April. There has been no nesting pair this year. Mark noted there is a lot of boat traffic near the raft and he will ask the Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) to suggest better signage and ways to protect the area. Mark and others have set up a Loon Cam. The camera keeps a constant watch on the nesting raft. The arrangement was quite expensive. A motion was made and seconded to support this effort by contributing $200 for 2009 and 2010 towards the cost. LKWA will have a link to the Loon Cam on it’s website at www.Kanasatka.org Motion carried unanimously.

Old Business: Mark Whary reported that the application to expand the Kilnwood Dock had been rejected by DES.

A motion was made and seconded to approve donations to the following organizations:
Squam Lake Association                 $200
Loon Preservation Committee          200
NH Lakes Association                      200
Lakes Region Conservation Trust     200
Moultonborough Public Library        50 (for use of meeting room)
Loon Cam (per above)                     200

Motion carried unanimously.

New Business: Antonia explained that it is time to elect new officers of LKWA to a two-year term. Antonia and Doug are willing to stay on in their respective positions as President and Treasurer. Laurie Whitley is resigning as VP effective at the August meeting. Jane Fairchild, our current Secretary, expressed interest in filling the VP role, which means the LKWA has an open secretary position. If anyone would like to do this job and/or nominate someone, please contact Antonia.

Antonia asked if the membership had any new business to discuss.

An inquiry was made about seeing a large snake.

The August picnic will be on August 15th at Vonhurst Beach at 11:00am. It will be potluck – no grilling this time. Drinks will be provided.

Meeting adjourned at 10:15am.

Respectfully Submitted,
Jane Fairchild, Secretary LKWA
