President Bill Smith welcomed those present for the meeting at 9:30 a.m. and noted that
the Lake Kanasatka Watershed Association was incorporated January 3, 1978, and is now
25 years old. He recognized one of the original incorporaters, Bob Foster., who was
present.
He introduced the present officers - John Scudder, Vice President, who stated that the
website is still running and is now www.kanasatka.org. There are up to date photos on the

In the past recommended payments from LKWA included:
LPC $50 (Hall)
$100
LRCT $100
NHLA $100
Bob Brennan asked whether these contributions should be increased to $200.
He described the outreach of each organization:
LPC - attempted nesting raft for Ioons by Conway's but there were no chicks.
Lakes Region Conservation Trust - are the owners of the bulk of Red Hill and are making
final payments to Castle in the Clouds this year.
New Hampshire Lakes Association - lobbies on lake issues. Provides handouts of booklet
depicting dangerous weeds. The DES will do a weed survey this summer and will
inventory plants in our lake.
It was so moved to increase the contributions for each of the organizations to $200 and also
moved to include the Squam Lakes Association which had helped us in the past against the
Ford construction on Red Hill.
A question was raised re: the new construction on Red Hill. Bill Smith will look into that.
The loon count today was 3 Icons on Kanasatka.
The Water Quality officers are the Whitleys, Lauterwassers and McCreas. Results of this
activity are published each year which entails a $1000 expenditure to UNH. Our lake has
high quality,is stable and has good alkalinity -7 and 7 and one half PH. It is important to
maintain a buffer between one s property and the lake and be concerned about one's
septic system.
Bill Smith thanked the Hospitality Committee of Mary Anne McCrea, Jill Anderson and Fox
Smith for the morning’s delicious refreshments.
The Nominating Committee: Rachel Brooker, Kevin Kelly and John McCrea, will report on
the new slate of officers at the August 16th meeting.
Bill Smith introduced David Graham Wolf from Deep Conversation Consultants who
described with slides what lives in our lakes and how we can become actively involved in
conserving the freshwater biodiversity in New Hampshire’s lakes and ponds.
Bill Smith added that there are 12 major watersheds in New Hampshire and we are in the
Merrimack River Watershed. On another scale we are in the Lake Winnipesaukee
Watershed. We need to be concerned about anything that is happening in our watershed
association as it can affect our water quality.
Laurie Whitley thanked Bill Smith for his work as President of the LKWA during the past 2
years. The next meeting will be Saturday, August 16th at Von’s Beach from 11am - 2 pm
with a cookout lunch and a chance for socializing and getting acquainted with fellow LKWA
members.
Respecffully submitted,
Barbara Lauterwasser
