LAKE KANASATKA WATERSHED ASSOCIATION

Loon Center, Moultonborough, New Hampshire

July 2l, 2001

MEETING MINUTES

President Rachel Brooker called the meeting to order at 9:35 AM and welcomed those attending. She introduced Nancy Christie, Executive Director of NHLA who emphasized the need for protecting the valuable resources of our lakes. She commented on the volunteer efforts of the Lakes Lay Monitoring Program. There are 800 individual members of the NHLA and l00 Lake Association members. The NHLA provides educational material (newsletter, etc.) works with lake friendly legislators. Sen. Carl Johnson is lake friendly and deserves our support. The NHLA distributed 2,000 boater decals last year.
The program has since been suspended because Marine Patrol was not sure they hadn't distributed then to both kinds of ski craft.

The Watershed Steward program is an outreach program and can impact the lake quality (grass clippings, fertilizer).
For legislation the NHLA has a full time staff person in Concord. The Personal Water Craft legislation under consideration will maintain the ban on #l and #2 water craft and allow us to petition a ban on #3 and #4 personal water craft.
Jordan Prouty will moderate a meeting on July 23 at the Loon Center regarding the personal water craft topic.

Another piece of legislation, the Shoreline Protection Act, has been in effect since l994. Is it working? Is more enforcement needed? There are only 2 enforcement officers for 800 lakes. Nancy Christie urged those present to become involved in pending legislation and contact one's representatives in Concord.

The second speaker was Roger Kelley, a native of Moultonboro, who showed most interesting slides of Lake Kanasatka, Moultonboro, Center Harbor, and delighted everyone with comments on the history of the area.

The business meeting followed. Barbara Lauterwasser read minutes of the August, 2000 meeting which were approved as written.
John Scudder discussed the web site link he has provided for current and up-to-date news of the L-pack ramp.

Election of officers will take place at the August meeting. Rachel asked for volunteers for the Nominating Committee. A new President needs to be elected. The other officers will run for another term.

The August 18th picnic will be held at Vonhurst Beach at 3 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help with food, etc.

There were pictures of the 4th of July boat parade available.

The loon survey showed there are just 3 adult loons on the lake this year.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:10 AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Lauterwasser, Secretary
