President Rachel Brooker introduced the officers of the LKWA: V. Pres. John Scudder, Treas. Bob Brennan, Sec. Barb Lauterwasser, Water Quality Program Chair, Bill Smith.

Bill Smith introduced the speaker, Bob Craycraft of UNH, Fresh Water Biology Group. Mr. Craycraft stated that the Volunteer Lay Lakes Water Monitoring program for water clarity was established in 1983. Although the lakes are in pretty good shape, there continue to be some threats: Septic systems - some are old and less efficient

Land use - logging, construction, agriculture and urbanization

At the conclusion of his talk, Mr. Craycraft answered many questions.

President Brooker asked for a motion to waive the reading of the minutes of the last meeting. It was so ordered. She then asked the officers to give their reports.

Vice Pres. John Scudder described the LKWA web site he has set up with up-to-date news of the Association plus all printed material (minutes, etc.). The web site is: http://users.erols.com/jscudder/kanasatka. Members are encouraged to visit the site, offer suggestions or make contributions to the page.

Treasurer Bob Brennan reported a balance of $4,512.34. As for membership, 30 members are paid up plus 15 who paid on Saturday. There are 165 lake lots, however not all lake lot owners are dues paying members. Expenses for the Association consist primarily of fees for the Lay Lakes Monitoring Program and newsletter mailings. Mr. Brennan asked about the possibility of putting some of the $4,000.00 into a short term CD - probably $2,000.00. A suggestion was made that a money market would pay more and it was agreed to do this.

It was moved and seconded to increase donations from $25.00 a year to $100.00 a year to the following organizations: The New Hampshire Lakes Association, The Lakes Region Conservation Trust, and the Loon Preservation Committee.

It was moved to spend the additional funds so that bulk mailings are forwarded to members whose addresses have changed or who maintain a winter residence elsewhere.

Bill Smith reported on water monitoring on Kanasatka. He has a copy available of the report for 1999 done and a copy has been placed in the Moultonborough Public Library. On 7/7/00 the air temperature was 73 degrees and the water temperature was 73.5 degrees. He also reported the secchi dish reading was 12 feet (4.5 meters), which is a good reading.

Rachel Brooker stated that the answers to the survey were summarized in the spring newsletter. She had sign-up sheets for Auxiliary Marine patrol and Lake Watch Volunteers and for the 4th of July boat parade for next summer.

She commented on the postcard display brought in by Lee Hart, depicting Lake Kanasatka.

The August 12th meeting will be held at the Vonhurst Beach starting at 3 p.m. Volunteers are needed to help with refreshments and games.

Our second speaker of the morning was Joan Barr, a biologist for the Loon Center. She brought us up to date on the status of the loons on Lake Kanasatka. The pair started nesting on June 3rd but on 6/28 there was a disturbance. Examination of the nesting site revealed eggshell fragments but no chick. Ms. Barr suggested the floating raft be moved to another location next year.

Rachel Brooker mentioned the boat survey, which will provide data on the number and kinds of boats on the lake. Those people doing the loon census have agreed to do the boat survey at the same time. The last surveys were done in August of 1990 and July of 1991.

There is a sign-up sheet for those who want to order T-shirts or caps. Also, a sign-up sheet is available for those wishing to have their names listed in a directory.

It was suggested that there could be a winter association meeting if there were enough people who were available. A sign-up sheet was routed for those interested.

The meeting adjourned at noon.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Lauterwasser, Secretary
