Meeting Minutes:
Guest Speaker -
President Kevin Kelly opened the meeting and introduced Mr. Wil Abbott, Director of the Science Center of New Hampshire since 1992. Mr. Abbott explained the purpose of the Science Center is to advance understanding of ecology and the natural world and the inter-relationships between animals. The Center is a popular spot for visitors. Many school children visit the Center, or some of the 260 volunteers visit classrooms during the school year. The Center features a loon cruise and a dusk lake cruise about full moon time. After his talk, Mr. Abbott answered questions from those present. One question concerned the black bear population, which is on the rise.
New Business -
Kevin Kelly opened the business meeting and asked for a motion to accept the July minutes. It was so moved. He then called for committee reports.
Nominating Committee, chaired by Bill Smith, presented the slate for 1999-2001 term, which was unanimously accepted:
President Rachel Brooker
The Association By-laws call for eight officers, however, due to the lack of members interested in serving, the Committee agreed to go with the five offices listed above.
Water Quality Committee - Chairman Bill Smith reported that the sampling of the lake water has been done for 17 years with samples sent to University of New Hampshire (UNH) for evaluation. The sampling is done to measure aquatic life, as opposed to the quality of the water for drinking. There are three different points of the lake that are sampled:

The Annual Lake Kanasatka NH Lakes Lay Monitoring Program report for 1998, published by UNH, is available at the Moultonboro Public Library. It concludes that Lake Kanasatka is a stable lake but at risk because some of the parameters are borderline.
In summary:
1. Water Clarity - UNH ranks lakes as very clean if you can see 12 ft. Clarity of Lake Kanasatka is 4.5 meters, making it a very clean lake.
2. Chlorophyll - A good reading of chlorophyll (algae growth) in a water column is less than 3 parts per billion. Readings on Lake Kanasatka range from 1.3 - 7.7, with an average of 3.
3. Phosphorus - A good reading is less than 15 parts per billion. Lake Kanasatka average for 1998 was 10.5.
4. Dissolved Oxygen - The amount of dissolved oxygen that is healthy for fish is greater than 5%. Lake Kanasatka average for 1998 was 5% - 10%.
5. PH - Lake Kanasatka's acidity level was always above 7, which is good. The lake bedrock acts as a buffer and keeps the PH high.
UNH recommendations to preserve Kanasatka's water quality are:
Treasurer's Report - Bob Brennan reported the balance of the payment for the UNH Lay Monitoring Program was $824.00, the total being $1,000.00 for the year. The balance of the LKWA treasury is $4,661.35, deposits were $775.00. $75.00 was paid to the Loon Preservation Committee for rental of the hall for July's meeting. $69.30 was paid to Kevin Kelly for supplies. Bob Brennan entertained a motion to send $25.00 to Center Harbor for the use of Mead Hall for the August meeting..
Membership data: as of the July meeting, 41 members had paid. The up-to-date figure, as of this meeting, is 89. It was moved and seconded to accept the treasurer's report.
Old Business -
Kevin Kelly reported that most of the personal watercraft on Kanasatka this summer have been legal. Kevin then brought the members' attention to the handy brochure produced by the Tinclers. Kevin decided not to distribute brochures to realtors but rather to encourage members who rent out to ensure clients have the information available.
Announcements -
Retie Johnson asked if anyone has a row boat for sale that doesn't leak. Kevin has a propane dryer, if anyone is interested.
Kevin introduced Rachel Brooker, the new president. Rachel thanked Sandy Kelly for all her delicious coffee hour breads. She thanked Kevin for his good job and all gathered gave him a hearty round of applause.
The
meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
Respectfully submitted
