LAKE KANASATKA WATERSHED ASSOCIATION
Center Harbor Firehouse Building
August 20, 2005
President John Scudder opened the meeting and introduced the officers: Vice President - Laurie Whitley; Secretary - Barbara Lauterwasser; Treasurer - Bob Brennan.
Barbara Lauterwasser read the minutes of the July 23, 2005 meeting. It was suggested amending the minutes to add the question raised at the July meeting re: registration of rafts on the lake. Another question was raised
concerning the $200 contribution to the Squam Lakes Association and this was adequately answered. A motion was made and passed to accept the minutes as amended.
Laurie Whitley said she had contacted Integrated Water Systems concerning the bacteria problem question raised in July and they said it was advisable not to test at the moment unless there was a specific area of concern. As
for mercury testing, you need a fish to test. Anyone who wants water tested can take a sample to the Laconia Water Works and they will test at no cost.
Herb Lauterwasser went out on August 11th with Bob Craycraft from UNH testing 3 areas in the lake.
A question was raised about the amount of algae near the shore near the Sousa's property and one of the reasons has been the very warm lake temperature this summer encourages plant life. It is important to keep a buffer at your shoreline to keep vegetation from being washed into the lake.
Our water quality is pristine.
The boat count was conducted by Bill Smith, Scott Wallace, Chris Wallace, Brian Wallace, Lawrence Pizer, and John Scudder. The count showed most categories remaining the same but there were 72 kayaks and 12 PWC.
One fact stated was that one spotter is needed when towing one person but 2 spotters are needed if 2 people are being towed.
A suggestion was made that information be put in mailboxes regarding restrictions about jet skis. Also it would be helpful to stress this in the Newsletter.
Some boaters are going much too close to the rafts and to the shoreline not observing the 150 foot limit.
Sue Schmidt showed a fish hook found right in their swimming area. One is not supposed to fish in or near swimming areas.
Re: question of rafts: registration with a sticker number on the side of a raft will be required in another year. This is for the purpose of identifying the raft should it get loose.
The slate of officers for 2005-06 includes President - John Scudder; Vice President - Laurie Whitley; Secretary - Barbara Lauterwasser; and Treasurer - Doug Whitley. John Scudder thanked Bob Brennan for his many years of
service as treasurer. A motion was passed to accept the slate.
The Hospitality Committee will remain the same - Fox Smith, Mary Anne McRae and Jill Anderson. Jane Fairchild will organize the Boat Parade. A suggestion was made that the Sunday preceding the 4th of July might be a
less busy time for the parade.
The Water Quality team is Kevin and Sandy Kelly, Peter and Jane Fairchild, and Herb and Barbara Lauterwasser.
A question was raised about moving the picnic meeting to July instead of August as a change. There would be a speaker for the August meeting.
John Scudder asked for more volunteer help with the Newsletter rounding up articles for the Newsletter. Also, let John know if there is something that should go on the website which is www.kanasatka.org.
Bob Brennan moved that we contribute $50 to the Center Harbor Fire Department for the use of their building for our meeting. This motion was passed.
There is a possibility that by next summer the new addition to the Moultonborough library may be ready to be used for meetings, etc.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:55 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara B. Lauterwasser
Secretary
