LAKE KANASATKA WATERSHED ASSOCIATION MEETING

Vonhurst Beach, Moultonborough, New Hampshire

August 12, 2000

MEETING MINUTES

President Brooker called the meeting to order at 3:35 P.M. and welcomed all in attendance.

A motion was made that the reading of the minutes of the July 8th meeting be waived and it was so ordered. The minutes are published on the LKWA web site - http://users.erols.com/jscudder/kanasatka.

Vice President John Scudder recapped web site news from the July meeting and mentioned that all reports are published on the web site.

John Scudder gave the report for Treasurer Bob Brennan.

59 people attended the July meeting. The total number of paid members is 60.  Last year there were 86 paid members. There are 165 homes on the Association list.  Four new members paid dues at the start of this meeting, so the total is now 64.

The following expenses were reported:

$150.00 - Loon Preservation Committee ($50.00 for use of the Loon Center)

$100.00 - New Hampshire Lakes Association
$100.00 - Lakes Region Conservation Trust
$ 65.00 - Portable toilet for August 12th meeting

There is a total worth of $4,595.37.

A motion was made and seconded to accept the treasurer's report - so ordered.

Water Quality Committee Chairman, Bill Smith, reporting on the water quality of the lake, stated that last summer's report is available, one copy residing in the Moultonborough Public Library.  He had sampled three sites in the rain the previous week and noted a zoe plankton explosion, resulting in greater water clarity. He emphasized again, "Take care of the shoreline."  Smith presented a bill from the University of New Hampshire of $781.00 for the Lay Lakes Water Quality Monitoring Program. A motion was made to pay the bill, and it was seconded and approved.

The annual loon census was taken on July 15th. Shirley McCue reported seeing none in the morning during the census, but she did see a couple later in the day.

Rachel Brooker reported that the repairs to the boat ramp have not yet been started. DES plans to repair the existing ramp without enlarging the area, and they will do some landscaping to improve drainage of run-off from Rt. 25.

Concerns regarding jet craft seen on the lake were expressed. Some of those are the legal personal watercraft. Brooker encouraged members to make reports to the Marine Patrol or call her and she will make reports. Marine Patrol is understaffed and generally unconcerned about Jet Ski issues. Brooker again encouraged members to consider joining the Auxiliary Marine Patrol to enhance compliance and safety on the lake.

NEW BUSINESS:

The Assisted Lake Protection Rules have passed, enabling lake associations or groups of 25 people or more to petition the State for "enhanced enforcement." If LKWA wants to put forward a petition, we must have volunteer Marine Auxiliary Patrol on the lake.

The meeting was adjourned and members were reminded that Michael Vermouth of Newfound Woodworks had several woodstrip kayaks and canoes on hand for them to try out.

A delightful picnic followed the meeting for the families attending.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Lauterwasser,  Secretary
